For months, there has been a gridlock in Congress over the funding for Ukraine’s security. Former President Donald Trump had doubts about providing more aid to Kyiv, and about half of House Republicans opposed further support. Speaker Mike Johnson couldn’t afford any opposition from his party members. Trump, as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, had been critical of the billions of dollars given as foreign aid while problems persist at home. As Trump expressed stronger opposition to US assistance for Kyiv, polls showed that support among GOP voters was also declining.
